The Peterborough Lakers are Minto Cup
champions.
Shawn Evans scored three goals on Saturday afternoon to help lift
the Lakers to a 9-5 win over the Six Nations Arrows and take the
Canadian Junior A lacrosse championship.
Chad Evans added two while Simon Kayser, Cory Vitarelli, Kyle
Sorensen and Mike Grimes also had goals for Peterborough.
Dan Sams made 47 saves in goal for the Lakers.
Jeremy Thompson, with two, Craig Point, Jacob Kicknosway-Louks
and Jon Williams replied for the Six Nations Arrows, which last won
this event in 1992.
The Lakers took an 8-5 lead into the final period at Iroquois
Lacrosse Arena thanks to a big middle frame. Grimes scored into an
empty net late in the game to put it away.
The Arrows took a 3-1 lead on Kicknosway-Louks's breakaway goal
4:27 in but Chad Evans responded 30 seconds later and Shawn Evans
tied it at 8:29. Thompson put the Arrows back up at 10:02 before
Shawn Evans tied it again at 13:16.
Vitarelli gave Lakers their first lead at 14:02 and Chad Evans
followed with another 26 seconds later before Williams ended a run
of three straight Peterborough goals with his score three minutes
later.
Shawn Evans then scored his third of the period at 17:28, sending
goalie Grant Crawley to the bench for Ben VanEvery, who gave up
Sorensen's goal with 35 seconds left in the period.
Thompson opened the scoring 2:27 into the first period, but
Kayser tied things up just 10 seconds later. Point scored at 13:17
to give the Arrows a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
