John Tavares, the all-time leading scorer in pro lacrosse, has re-signed with the Buffalo Bandits, director of operations Dave Zygaj announced Monday.
It's a one-year renewal worth US$25,552 _ the maximum for a franchise player under the National Lacrosse League's collective bargaining agreement with the players' association.
``John is one of the best players to ever play the game,'' Zygaj said. ``We're excited to have him lead our team again this year.''
Tavares helped lead the Bandits to an 11-5 record and an appearance in the championship game last season. His 85 points (32 goals, 53 assists) led the team and ranked sixth in the league during the regular season.
The 38-year-old native of Toronto teaches math at a Mississauga high school.
Tavares broke Gary Gait's career scoring record last March 6 with 1,092 points, and he finished the season with 1,136 (549-587).
Having already broken the league records for points and assists, Tavares will enter the 2007 season 47 goals shy of Gait's mark of 596 career goals.
