Chris Durand scored a fortunate short-handed goal
in overtime to deny the Vancouver Giants a chance to make Western
Hockey League history.
Durand's goal, which took a strange bounce off the wall and into
an empty net when goalie Dustin Slade left to crease to play the
puck.
The loss was the first of the season for Vancouver, 10-0-1-0.
Vancouver was 22 seconds away from breaking the WHL record for
consecutive victories to start the season when Aaron Gagnon tied the
game at one for Seattle with a power play goal.
The Giants were attempting to better the record set the 1978-79
Brandon Wheat Kings team that won 10 in a row to open the season.
Jason Reese had first goal of the game for Vancouver, his seventh
of the season, when he scored with 19 seconds remaining in the
second period.
Seattle outshot Vancouver 29-23 and improves to 2-3-0-3. Slade
was attempting to tie former Seattle goaltender Bryan Bridges with
21 regular season career shutouts.
