Quebec junior team suspends player for alleged drunk driving

Jonathan Leberge, a forward with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, has been suspended for alleged drunk driving.

The team suspended the 19-year-old assistant captain for seven days and ordered him to do 200 hours of community work even though he has yet to appear in court on the charge.

Tipper LeBlanc, the team's general manager, defended suspending his player before the court has even dealt with the case.

``That we've acted before the court is because we do have a code of conduct we stress and we want these kids to understand it's not only on-ice performance but off-ice performance is very important,'' he told Global News.

Laberge was stopped by police last Sunday.

He is to appear in court Nov. 21.
