Gatineau nabs top spot in QMJHL after 7 3 victory over Shawinigan

The Gatineau Olympiques have secured the top spot in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey league.

They moved into first place Friday after a 7-3 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes, the previous leaders.

Elsewhere in QMJHL action Friday, it was P.E.I. 6, Acadie-Bathurst 5; Halifax 4, Saint John 0; Cape Breton 4, Lewiston 3; Val-d'Or 1, Chicoutimi 0; Moncton 5, Rimouski 3; and Baie-Comeau 8, Rouyn-Noranda 2.

At Shawinigan, Que., Alexandre Boivin registered a hat trick, while Brett Morrison and Keven Petit added a goal apiece for the Olympiques (7-1-0-1).

Francis Pare, Guillaume Durand and Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll scored for Rouyn-Noranda (4-5-0-0).

Rocket 6, Titan 5

At Bathurst, N.B., Matthew Lachaine scored at 19:45 of the third period to lead P.E.I. to a close victory over the Titan.

Pierre-Marc Guilbault, Geoff Walker, Martin Latal, David Laliberte, and Greg Paynter also scored for the Rocket (5-2-0-1).

Mathieu Perreault registered a hat trick, while Tomy Joly and Thomas Beauregard added one each for Acadie-Bathurst (3-7-0-0).

Mooseheads 4, Sea Dogs 0

At Saint John, N.B., Jeremy Duchesne stopped 33 shots as Halifax blanked the Sea Dogs.

James Pouliot, Daniel Smith, Ryan Hillier and Jakub Voracek added one each for the Mooseheads (5-4-0-0).

Maxime Joyal saved 48 shots for Saint John (2-4-1-1).

Screaming Eagles 4, Lewiston 3

At Lewiston, Maine, Paul Alexander McIlveen scored twice to give Cape Breton the win over the Maineiacs.

Francois Gauthier and Bradley Gallant added one apiece for the Screaming Eagles (5-4-0-0).

Marc-Andre Cliche, Marc-Andre Daneau and David Perron scored for Lewiston (4-3-0-0).

Foreurs 1, Sagueneens 0

At Chicoutimi, Que., Marc-Andre Cote scored the lone goal early in the third as Val-d'Or downed the Sagueneens.

Raffaele D'Orso stopped 22 shots for the Foreurs (5-1-1-1).

Bobby Nadeau made 25 saves for Chicoutimi (2-5-2-1), allowing the only goal in the first minute of the third period.

Wildcats 5, Oceanic 3

At Rimouski, Que., Brad Ouskun grabbed a hat trick as Moncton beat the Oceanic.

Matt Eagles and Randy Cameron also added goals for the Wildcats (6-4-0-0).

Phillipe Cornet, Jordan Caron and Max Gratchev each scored for Rimouski (1-5-2-0).

Drakkar 8, Huskies 2

At Baie-Comeau, Que., Francois Bouchard and Benjamin Brault registered two goals and an assist each as the Drakkar routed Rouyn-Noranda.

Olivier Donais also scored two, while Joakim Jensen and Keven Dupont added one each for Baie-Comeau (7-2-0-0).

Yannick Riendeau and Ivan Vishnevskiy scored for the Huskies (4-5-0-0).
