Yashin has goal, assist as Islanders blank Devils 3 0 in exhibition game

Alexei Yashin had a goal and assist for the second straight night, and Rick DiPietro was perfect in a cameo appearance in his old stomping grounds as the New York Islanders finished the exhibition schedule with a 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

Yashin, who contributed on both goals Friday in a 2-1 home win against the New York Rangers, did the trick again. He needed only a span of 2:26 to pull it off this time.

The Islanders' captain deflected a shot from defenceman Tom Poti past goalie Martin Brodeur at 2:32, just 1:11 into a power play. Yashin then ripped a shot from the left-wing side that Brodeur stopped, but Miroslav Satan charged in for the in-close rebound and made it 2-0 4:58 after the opening faceoff.

DiPietro made that stand up in his one period of work, making 10 saves in his final tuneup before the Islanders open the regular season Thursday night at Phoenix. New York finished the pre-season with three consecutive wins after two losses to Boston.

Trent Hunter closed the scoring with an unassisted, short-handed goal with two minutes left in the game.

DiPietro played parts of three seasons in this arena with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Islanders' AHL affiliate, and earned 46 victories before reaching the NHL for good. He was relieved by Mike Dunham, who made 19 saves a day after signing a one-year deal to be DiPietro's backup.

After the first-period flurry, Brodeur showed his typical stellar form and finished with 29 saves in a complete-game effort. He was especially sharp in the middle frame when he stopped a hard shot off Poti's stick from the left side with his right arm, and then robbed Yashin from the same spot on the same shift with a snapping glove save.

But it wasn't enough to extend the Devils' pre-season winning streak, snapped at two following a three-game losing skid. New Jersey (3-4) will begin the regular season on Friday night against the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.

Among the Devils and Islanders jerseys that were scattered across the half-filled, 8,000-seat arena were those of the former Hartford Whalers, who left Connecticut for Raleigh, N.C., in 1997 and became the Hurricanes.
