Marty Turco, Martin Havlat, Mats Sundin named NHL three stars of the week

The NHL is revamping its weekly player awards, awarding three stars to the top three performers of the week instead of handing out offensive and defensive honours.

Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco was named the first star of the week on Monday, ahead of Chicago Blackhawks winger Martin Havlat and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin.

Due to the midweek start of the regular season, this week's selections covered action from the opening of the season Oct. 4 through Oct. 15.

Turco has played in each of Dallas' five victories this season, posting a 5-0-0 record, 1.56 goals-against average and .948 save percentage.

Havlat leads the NHL with 10 points (six goals and four assists) in four games.

Sundin had a hat trick in Toronto's overtime victory over Calgary on Saturday night to reach 500 goals for his career. He has the most overtime goals in regular-season play in NHL history with 15 and ranks seventh in league scoring with eight points in six games.
