Jose Theodore allowed five third-period goals
against his former team as the Montreal Canadiens skated to an 8-5
win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.
The goaltending showdown between Theodore and Montreal's David
Aebischer, who were traded for each other in March, turned into a
shooting gallery with goals in bunches from both teams, with
Colorado outshooting Montreal 38-36.
Theodore, greeted with derisive chants from the Bell Centre crowd
of 21,273 throughout the match, was beaten by ...

The gesture from a teammate means as much as
getting to wear No. 26 for Colorado Avalanche forward Paul Stastny.
Stastny's father, Peter Stastny, wore that number during his
stellar NHL career, who played with Quebec, New Jersey and St. Louis
from 1980 to 1995.
Defenceman John-Michael Liles gave No. 26 to the younger Stastny
and took No. 4. The players were to don their new numbers for the
first time in a game Saturday night against ...

Is it better for the Colorado Avalanche to send
Jose Theodore to the Bell Centre boo-birds or let him sit out his
first game back in Montreal?
If the city's often-fickle fans have a say, they'll want Theodore
in goal when Colorado plays the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday
night.
And it's likely that Theodore would relish the chance to prove a
lot of people wrong who applauded when the Canadiens and Avalanche
swapped starting goalies last March.
The decision ...

The power play continues to cause the Ottawa
Senators grief and on Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche, it
caused a defeat.
The Senators, owners of the NHL's worst power play, not only went
0-for-4 with the extra man, they also gave up a shorthanded goal to
Brad Richardson in the second period and that proved to be the
eventual winner in Colorado's 2-1 victory before a crowd of 17,728
at Scotiabank Place.
The loss was a record fourth ...

Defenceman John-Michael Liles scored his first two
goals of the season Wednesday night and the Colorado Avalanche began
a three-game Canadian road trip with a 4-1 win over the Toronto
Maple Leafs.

Ian Laperriere had two assists apiece for the Avalanche (2-2-2), who

The fifth round of the NHL entry draft is where teams feel comfortable taking risks, hoping to find a longshot buried among the leftovers.
It definitely wasn't where Brad Richardson expected to hear his name called in 2003.
He'd had some scoring success in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack and there were plenty of people around him saying the he'd be an early-round pick.
Instead, he fell right ...

It has been an ugly start for the Colorado
Avalanche.
A perennial power, the Avalanche are 1-2-2 so far this season,
already six points behind division-leading Minnesota. They look
puzzled at times on the ice and watched an NHL-record 487-game
sellout streak come to an end on Monday night after 11 years.
It's time for a road trip. The Avalanche will face Toronto,
Ottawa and Montreal in a four-day span _ something forward Ian
Laperriere is looking forward ...

If it's not one Martin beating the opposition, it's
the other.
Martin Lapointe scored a pair of goals during the Chicago
Blackhawks' 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.
The other Martin _ Martin Havlat _ had a good game, too,
assisting on a pair of goals. He now has six goals and six assists
through five games.
With Havlat off to a torrid start, teams are keeping a close
watch on him. That opens up ...

Petr Sykora and Ryan Smyth each scored twice and
the Edmonton Oilers cracked Colorado's stellar special teams defence
in a 4-3 win over the Avalanche on Saturday night.
Smyth deflected Jason Smith's shot from the right point past Jose
Theodore for his second goal, breaking a 2-2 tie just 20 seconds
into the third period. Less than four minutes later, Sykora's wrist
shot from the slot dribbled between Theodore's pads.
Colorado pulled to 4-3 when Milan Hejduk ...

This is the most anticipated season in the Minnesota Wild's brief history, and they showed a new spirit along with several acquisitions in their opener.
Todd White scored 1:03 into overtime, and Minnesota overcame two goals by Colorado's Brad Richardson for a 3-2 victory over the Avalanche on Thursday night.
``It just seemed like that puck was going to go in, no matter what,'' said Wild goalie Manny Fernandez, who ...

Marek Svatos scored one of Colorado's three first-period goals and had the lone goal in a shootout to give the Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams.
