The playoff picture in the National Hockey League became clear Sunday and it did not include the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A day after they sent the Montreal Canadiens home for the summer, the Maple Leafs watched their season come to an end by virtue of the New York Islanders' 3-2 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils.
That gave the Islanders the final post-season spot in the Eastern Conference with 92 points, one more than Toronto. They will face top-seeded Buffalo in the first round.
Three Canadian teams did qualify for the playoffs.
The Calgary Flames landed the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference on Saturday when Nashville defeated Colorado 4-2, ending the Avalanche's bid to overtake them.
Calgary will face Detroit in the first round.
The Vancouver Canucks clinched the Northwest Division title with 4-3 overtime win over San Jose on Saturday and will open the first round at home against Dallas.
And in the East, the Ottawa Senators nailed down home-ice advantage Saturday with a 6-3 win over Boston. They will meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs.
The other first-round matchups are: New Jersey versus Tampa Bay; Atlanta versus the New York Rangers; Nashville versus San Jose; and Anaheim versus Minnesota.
