Jean Sebastien Giguere stops 21 shots as Ducks beat Red Wings 4 1

Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 21 shots and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Giguere made saves on the first 20 shots he faced, then his shutout bid ended when rookie Tomas Kopecky beat him at close range with 5:36 left in the game. The goal was Kopecky's first in the NHL.

Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer and the rest of the Anaheim defenders kept the pressure off Giguere most of the game.

Corey Perry had a goal and two assists, and Ryan Getzlaf, Shane O'Brien and Chris Kunitz each had a goal and an assist.

The Ducks' three goals in the second period all came on power plays. Perry's score, good for a 4-0 pad in the third period, was at even strength.

Getzlaf beat goalie Dominik Hasek on a 20-foot slap shot 8:46 of the second period, his second goal of the season. O'Brien quickly made it 2-0 with his first NHL goal, on a 50-foot wrist shot at 10:36.

Kunitz added his fourth goal of the season at 18:13 of the period, beating Hasek at close range.

The Ducks' victory came after they had lost two in a row on shootouts, to Dallas and the New York Islanders.

Anaheim got off 30 shots at Hasek.

Retzlaf put the Ducks ahead when he sliced in across the left circle past defenceman Chris Chelios and sailed the puck past Hasek on the stick side.

The 23-year-old O'Brien, taken by Anaheim as the 250th player in the 2003 draft, scored his initial NHL goal with his hard shot from near the right boards. Hasek apparently didn't even see the puck, since the Ducks' Dustin Penner was parked in front of the goal.

Perry, skating across the goal line to the right of the Red Wings' net, set up Kunitz's score with a pass into the crease. Kunitz had only to poke the puck past the sprawling Hasek.

The Ducks outshot the Red Wings 10-9 in a scoreless first period.

Anaheim's Teemu Selanne appeared to give them the lead late in the period, but his shot from just left of the crease near the goal line was disallowed. A review showed the Detroit goal had been knocked off its mooring shortly before Selanne flipped the puck between Hasek and the left post, which had been bumped a couple of inches behind the goal line.

Notes: Selanne, who had 40 goals and 50 assists last season, has just one goal this season, on Oct. 7 against Phoenix. He has four assists. ... Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg, no factor in Wednesday's game, had four goals and four assists in 11 previous games against Anaheim, including three of the Red Wings' nine goals as they took the series 3-1 last season. ... Hasek, a six-time Vezina Trophy winner as the league's top goalie, is 7-7 against the Ducks and has lost his last four games against them.
