Tom Jenkins earned his seventh career Champions
Tour title Sunday after soggy conditions forced the cancellation of
the final round of the SAS Championship.
The 58-year-old finished at 10-under 134 for 36 holes, beating
out Champions Tour money leader Loren Roberts and tour newcomer Chip
Beck by one stroke.
``I was looking forward to competing with Loren and Chip, but I
am certainly happy to be the champion,'' said Jenkins, who has now
won a tournament in each of the last five seasons. ``A win is a win.
The weather was on my side this year.''
Despite relatively clear skies in the morning, the ground at
Prestonwood Country Club was too wet to play on following half an
inch of overnight rain.
Mitch Adock finished third at 8 under, and Jay Haas was one
stroke behind in fourth place. Jim Ahern and Andy Bean tied for
fifth at 5 under.
Jenkins earned US$300,000 for the victory.
``I know all the players, we wanted to get a full event for the
fans,'' Jenkins said. ``We try to put on a show.''
Roberts, a four-time winner on tour this year, maintained his
slim points lead over Haas in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
``Most people are disappointed (about the cancellation),'' Beck
said. ``Hale Irwin said, `Everyone wants to play but the winner.'
But I can understand.''
