Tom Jenkins moved into contention for his
seventh career Champions Tour victory, shooting a 6-under 66 in cool
and misty conditions Saturday to take the lead into the final round
of the SAS Championship.
The 58-year-old Jenkins had a 10-under 134 total on the
Prestonwood Country Club course, one stroke better than Champions
Tour money leader Loren Roberts and tour newcomer Chip Beck.
``Warming up, it was miserable,'' Jenkins said. ``It must have
been 45 on the practice tee. I didn't think it was every going to
get warm.''
Jenkins made four birdie putts of at least 20 feet, including a
40-footer at the 10th, and made six birdies overall. He took the
lead for good on the par-5 17th, overcoming a poor second shot and
draining a 15-foot putt for birdie.
``I've been playing up and down the last month or so,'' Jenkins
said. ``I've been fairly consistent this year.''
Roberts, a four-time winner this year who also tops the Charles
Schwab Cup points race, followed a first-round 67 with a 68, while
Beck, making his third Champions Tour start, shot a 65. Jay Haas, 20
points behind Roberts in the Schwab Cup standings, was three strokes
back at 7-under.
``Loren is on top of his game,'' Haas said. ``He will be tough to
catch.''
Beck, a native of nearby Fayetteville, N.C., birdied the last
four holes in front of a gallery of about 20 family members.
``I thought that my career was over,'' said Beck, a four-time PGA
Tour winner and one of three players to shoot a 59 on the tour. ``I
thought I would never play again. I had actually surrendered to
that. That was my lot in life.''
Andy Bean, the Greater Hickory Classic winner last week, shot a
69 to join Jim Ahern (70) at 5-under.
