John Daly withdrew from the BMW International at Nord-Eichenried on Thursday after being hospitalized with a gastrointestinal virus.
Daly, who won the event in 2001, was taken to a hospital in Munich on Thursday morning where doctors advised him not to play in the tournament.
Tournament spokesman Klaus Waeschle said Daly was being kept in hospital while doctors determined whether he was well enough to fly back to the U.S. later Thursday.
The 40-year-old American felt unwell after arriving in Munich on Tuesday and withdrew from a shootout that day and from Wednesday's pro-am to recover for the tournament.
There was no word on the status of Daly's participation in the Canadian Open, which starts Sept. 7 in Hamilton.
