Brett Favre couldn't deliver another
fourth-quarter comeback.
With Green Bay trailing St. Louis by three points with 2:46
remaining, Favre drove the Packers to the Rams 11-yard line in the
final minute. But Favre was sacked, fumbled and the Rams escaped
with a 23-20 victory.
The Rams made plenty of mistakes Sunday, including a rare slip-up
by quarterback Marc Bulger. But the Packers couldn't make them pay
until it was too late.
Bulger threw for two first-half touchdowns and extended his
league-best interception-free streak to 214 attempts _ thanks in
large part to Packers cornerback Al Harris.
With the Rams leading 17-13 and driving late in the third
quarter, Bulger threw Harris' way at the Green Bay 14, an errant
pass that hit Harris in the numbers. But instead of running 95 yards
down a clear path for a go-ahead touchdown, Harris dropped the ball.
The drive stalled, and Jeff Wilkins kicked a 26-yard field goal.
After a goal-line stand by the Packers on the Rams' next
possession, Wikins added another field goal to extend the lead to
23-13 with 9:25 remaining.
But after a relatively quiet three quarters, Favre answered with
a 46-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Greg Jennings.
Favre got the ball back with 2:46 remaining. After a nine-yard
pass to Jennings gave the Packers first-down on the Rams 11, Favre
spiked the ball with 44 seconds left.
But Jimmy Kennedy sacked Favre on the next play, and the ball
popped out. Offensive lineman Daryn Colledge had a chance to
recover, but it ended up in the hands of Rams cornerback Jerametrius
Butler.
The Rams led 14-13 at halftime as the Packers got surprisingly
strong running from third-string back Noah Herron, who had 106 yards
on 20 carries. Ahman Green was inactive for the second straight week
with a sore hamstring, forcing the Packers to start reserve back
Vernand Morency.
Morency, acquired in a trade with Houston for Samkon Gado last
month, lost a fumble on the Packers' first possession, giving the
ball to the Rams at the Packers 37.
Bulger led the Rams on a six-play scoring drive, throwing a
six-yard pass to Torry Holt for a 7-0 lead.
Morency fumbled again on the Packers' next series, but Green Bay
recovered. Still, Morency lost his spot in the backfield to Herron,
who had several strong runs, including a game-tying one-yarder for
the Packers' first touchdown rushing this season.
