It was a brutal day for quarterbacks: Donovan McNabb is out for the season with a knee injury and Brett Favre injured a nerve in his right elbow that could jeopardize his league record for consecutive starts.
They weren't the only banged-up players Sunday. Among others injured were New Orleans rookie receiver rookie Marques Colston (sprained ankle), Carolina running back DeShaun Foster (elbow) and Oakland running back Lamont Jordan, likely gone for the season with a torn knee ligament.
The biggest blow came in Philadelphia, where the Eagles' McNabb suffered a torn ligament in his right knee after tumbling out of bounds in the second quarter of a 31-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
``That's normally an eight-month-to-a-year injury,'' Eagles coach Andy Reid said of McNabb's torn ACL, ``so he's done for the year.''
That puts McNabb's timetable for recovery anywhere between July and the middle of next season.
``He's got some hard work ahead of him,'' Reid said. ``He'll get after it.''
It's the third time in five years McNabb's season ended early, and with Philadelphia just 5-5 the Eagles' playoff chances seem bleak.
McNabb, a five-time Pro Bowler, was rolling to his right near the Titans sideline and tumbled out of bounds after throwing an incomplete pass. He grabbed his leg and was immediately tended to by trainers. He was carted off the field, and replaced by Jeff Garcia.
Favre, meanwhile, left the field holding his right elbow late in the second quarter of a 35-0 loss to New England. He returned to the sideline in the third quarter, threw a little bit, but did not return.
``He took a shot on the elbow,'' Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. ``He was not able to gain strength in his hand, as far as holding the football, controlling the football.
``As far as the future, how bad it is, I'd be speculating.''
Favre was wrapped up low by Tully Banta-Cain and was on his way down when Tedy Bruschi hit him, forcing him down hard on his right arm and throwing shoulder with 1:41 left in the half. Favre holds the league mark for quarterbacks with 251 consecutive starts.
The three-time league MVP finished 5-of-15 for 73 yards. It was the fewest completions in a start in his career. He was replaced by Aaron Rodgers, who was walking with a limp after the game.
Favre and Rodgers both declined to talk to reporters.
The last time Favre was injured and did not return to a game was Oct. 3, 2004 against the New York Giants.
Jordan has a torn ligament in his left knee. The running back was injured after a 12-yard run in the first quarter of a 17-13 loss to Kansas City.
``Jordan's prognosis is that he tore his MCL,'' Raiders coach Art Shell said, referring to the medial collateral ligament.
The Raiders also lost left tackle Robert Gallery with a dislocated left elbow in the third quarter.
``They said there was no damage to the bone, which is good,'' Gallery said. ``I'll wait until tomorrow to see how much I tore as far as ligaments. We've got six weeks to go. I hope I can get back.''
Colston, the NFL's leading receiver through the first 10 weeks, was blocking during a first-quarter run against Cincinnati when he was bowled over from behind by several tacklers. He has a sprained left ankle, but the Saints did not update his condition after the game.
Foster injured his left elbow when he came down awkwardly on it following a short run in the second quarter of the Panthers' 15-0 win over St. Louis.
Also, St. Louis wide receiver Isaac Bruce left in the fourth quarter with blurry vision in the Rams' loss at Carolina; Lions DE Bertrand Berry left in the second half with an elbow injury in a loss to Arizona; and Packers TE David Martin injured his ribs.
Berry said his injury wasn't serious, and Martin's X-rays were negative.
Among Sunday's notable inactives were: Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez (shoulder); Browns RB Reuben Droughns (foot); Redskins WR Santana Moss (hamstring); Bucs defensive starters Simeon Rice (shoulder), Shelton Quarles (knee/ankle) and Ellis Wyms (ankle); Patriots DBs Asante Samuel (knee) and Eugene Wilson (hamstring); and Broncos RB Tatum Bell (sprained toes).
