Fantasy football players to start, and to avoid, in Week 5

There are 25 million reasons to watch the Cowboys-Eagles game this week, but for fantasy football players Dallas receiver Terrell Owens isn't very high on the list.

Of course he's very interesting, with the publicist, the stationary bike, the bitter feud with the Eagles and all the rest that goes along with being T.O. However, unlike years past, his football production is nowhere near the hype.

He has only one touchdown with Dallas _ about a month ago _ and he hasn't had a 100-yard game yet. Among the starting receivers in Philadelphia on Sunday, he's No. 4 in fantasy scoring. Looking at both teams combined, Owens ranks 12th in fantasy points, even below the kickers.

History indicates he'll have a big game Sunday, because he hasn't gone three straight games without a TD or 100 yards since 2000. And he'd love to show up the team that jilted him by not giving him a new contract after a year of good work.

But even if Owens does put up big numbers, he probably won't do it frequently this year. He'll be decent, but thanks to the Cowboys' run-first approach and their ability to use other weapons when he's covered, the chances are slim that he'll return to 1,300-yard, 12-TD form.

As you prepare to write a tell-all book about a former colleague, here's a look at some players to start in Week 5, some to avoid, and a few long shots that just may pan out:

QUARTERBACKS

A SAFE BET

_ Start everybody in the Philly grudge match. The Eagles' Donovan McNabb is surely eager to show how seamlessly the NFL's top offence can run without T.O. Dallas' Drew Bledsoe will keep throwing to T.O. just to get him to pipe down in the huddle.

_ No wonder the Bears were willing to wait for Rex Grossman to recover from his myriad injuries. He's great when he can walk, going 4-0 with eight touchdowns and 264 yards a game this year.

_ Washington's Mark Brunell has had a pretty good couple of weeks, setting an NFL record for consecutive completions against Houston and shredding the tough Jacksonville defence. He faces a Giants' pass defence that was resting long before the bye last week.

_ I think I understand the Brett Favre formula now. Against good defences, he'll throw two interceptions and no touchdowns. Against bad defences, he'll throw for 340 yards and three scores. He faces the Rams, who are kind of bad defensively.

_ Brad Johnson has looked like a 38-year-old relic while running the Vikings' snoozer of an offence, but the Lions should have him feeling youthful in no time. Detroit has allowed an NFL-worst 10 touchdown passes, all in the last three games.

TAKE A SHOT

_ San Francisco's Alex Smith gets a lot of glares from his receivers after his numerous errant throws, but they should be all smiles against the sad-sack Raiders.

BACK AWAY SLOWLY AND NOBODY GETS HURT

Please, in the name of Drew Henson, don't start these guys:

_ It would be nice if Arizona's Matt Leinart had a big game after replacing turnover master Kurt Warner, if for no other reason than to make Dennis Green not look nauseated all the time. But the rookie's facing the Chiefs, who haven't given up a TD pass.

_ Miami's Daunte Culpepper gets sacked so much that last week in Houston it seemed even David Carr felt sorry for him. (His updated stats without Randy Moss, by the way: 3-8, with eight touchdowns, 15 interceptions and 52 sacks.)

_ Even after the rest of a bye week, keep Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger on the bench until he snaps out of his statistical nightmare. He has zero touchdowns, five interceptions and a fumble in his last two games.

RUNNING BACKS

ALL DAY LONG

_ New Orleans' Reggie Bush has scored as many touchdowns as Mario Williams while learning that NFL defenders are nearly as fast as him. He faces a much slower batch this week, though _ the Buccaneers, who allow 170 yards rushing a game.

_ The Colts' 1-2 punch of Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes should pile up huge numbers against the Titans, who give up an NFL-worst 177 yards rushing a game. The only thing that could slow them down is if Peyton Manning tosses a couple of TD passes out of boredom.

_ While the Eagles are guarding against big plays from Owens, look for Julius Jones to have big numbers. He's scored in two games and gone for 90 yards in another, and is averaging nearly 5 yards a carry.

_ DeShaun Foster finally scored and ran for 100 yards last week as the Panthers continued to get their offence rolling. He could do even more against the defenceless Browns, who give up 149 yards rushing a game.

_ If the offensive line-less Browns can have a 100-yard runner against the Raiders, it seems Frank Gore can do it for the offensive line-less 49ers. That is, if he doesn't fumble for the fifth straight game.

HE COULD FIND A SEAM

_ Jacksonville's Fred Taylor was ridiculous with 16 yards last week. But if he's healthy he could get serious against the Jets, who have given up an NFL-high eight rushing TDs.

RED FLAGS

_ Maybe Arizona's Edgerrin James can be decent with Leinart at QB, but you may want to keep him on the bench until he proves it. (You think James sighs audibly while watching Colts highlights?)

_ Buffalo's Willis McGahee leads the league in rushing, so it seems a given to start him. But the Bears have only allowed one offensive TD, and have you seen what they've been doing to people?

_ Bench all Auburn running backs in Florida. Cadillac Williams of the Bucs is in a woeful offence with a rookie QB making his first start. Ronnie Brown is featured, but in Miami's train wreck of an offence.

WIDE RECEIVERS

THROW HIM THE DARN BALL!

_ Washington's Santana Moss is coming off a three-touchdown game. The last time he played the Giants he had three touchdowns. According to my calculations, he's certain to score three times this week.

_ The Patriots, having finally decided to give into peer pressure and use wide receivers in their offence, seem to have a pretty good one in Doug Gabriel. He's scored in two straight games.

_ Start the Rams' Isaac Bruce against the NFC North. A week after his first 100-yard game in two years in a win over the Lions, he faces the Packers _ the team he had his last 100-yard game against in 2004.

_ After blowing first-round draft picks on receivers who can't play, the Lions finally found a No. 2 receiver in converted defensive back Mike Furrey. Start him this week just because it's a fun underdog story. (And a fun name.)

_ Once the Vikings were finally forced to explore the benefits of the forward pass last week, Marcus Robinson was the frequent target because of Troy Williamson's butterfingers.

MAYBE THROW HIM THE DARN BALL?

_ Wow, Oakland's Randy Moss almost had 100 yards last week oops, I read that wrong; that's 84 yards for the season. Still, Moss might be worth a start for old time's sake against the awful 49ers.

SHOW HIM THE DARN BENCH

_ The Giants' Plaxico Burress is coming off a one-catch game and has been banged up. Apparently his hands are still sore from all the balls that have been bouncing off them.

_ Keep Joey Galloway on the bench while Tampa Bay rolls out rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. The Bucs are one of the league's worst offences even with an experienced QB.

_ Don't be fooled by Eddie Kennison, who briefly reappeared on the fantasy radar with a TD. The Chiefs will hand off exclusively against Arizona.

FREE AGENT SHOPPING LIST

Roll the dice on these guys if they're still available in your league:

_ Vernand Morency of Green Bay (99 yards rushing, 6 catches), Jon Kitna of Detroit (280 yards, 2 TDs), Furrey (2 TDs), Gabriel (TD).

WHAT DO I KNOW?

Here's the best and worst of last week's projections:

_ Big Hits: I suggested starting Charlie Frye (3 TDs), Laurence Maroney (125 yards, 2 TDs) Julius Jones (122 yards, TD), Thomas Jones (98 yards, 2 TDs) and Marques Colston (132 yards, TD).

_ Big Misses: I for the last time picked Daunte Culpepper (249 yards, TD) to finally wake up. I was incredibly wrong suggesting the bench for Mark Brunell and Santana Moss, who combined for three scores and big yardage. I also predicted failure for Reggie Williams (2 TDs).
