Big Ten fines schools, reprimands coaches after shoving incident

Illinois and Michigan State were fined US$10,000 apiece and coaches Ron Zook and John L. Smith were reprimanded Wednesday by the Big Ten as the result of a post-game altercation between the teams Saturday.

Moments after Illinois upset Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., 23-20, Illinois players attempted to plant their school flag at midfield of Spartan Stadium. That led to pushing and shoving between several players on each side before order was restored and the teams went to their locker rooms.

Zook of Illinois and Smith of Michigan State were reprimanded for failing to ``ensure that their teams conducted themselves in an acceptable fashion,'' the Big Ten said in a statement.

Zook apologized after the game for his players celebration.
