Windsor running back Daryl Stephenson was named the offensive player of the week in Canadian university football Wednesday while Mount Allison teammates Jock Gemmell and Gary Ross were also honoured after helping their team to its first win in four years.
Stephenson, a third-year human kinetics major from London, Ont., rushed for 247 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 41-28 win over York on Saturday. Stephenson leads the CIS this season with 886 yards rushing in six games.
Quarterback Erik Glavic of Saint Mary's as well as running backs Andrew Hamilton of Concordia and Matt Henry of Manitoba were also up for the offensive honour.
Gemmell, a defensive back from Stratton, Ont., claimed the defensive award as the first two interceptions of his CIS career helped the Mounties put an end to a 34-game losing streak with a 24-18 win over St. Francis Xavier.
Linebackers Jean-Francois Vibert of Montreal and Jesse Alexander of Laurier and defensive end Justin Cooper of Manitoba were also nominated for the defensive honour.
Ross, a rookie punt returner from Windsor, Ont., captured the special teams honour as he recorded 185 return yards in the Mounties victory, including a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown. Ross leads the Atlantic conference in kickoff return yards (286) and all-purpose yards (839) and ranks second in punt return yards (206).
Returners Schuyler O'Brien of McGill and Dante Luciani of Laurier and Jim Jeavons of Manitoba were also considered.
