Noel Prefontaine's tutelage helped Brian Diesbourg
nail a 50-yard field goal for $1 million last year and Bill Szijarto
hopes the Toronto Argonauts kicker can do the same thing for him.
``I've got a good feeling about him,'' Szijarto said Thursday as
he practised with the all-star at the Rogers Centre. ``I think he'll
be there every step of the way. That's the kind of guy he is.''
Szijarto's name was drawn from 1.5 million entries to take part
in Wendy's Kick for a Million contest during halftime of Friday's
game between the Roughriders and Argos. He huddled with Diesbourg,
last year's winner, before the session with Prefontaine and later
pondered all the advice.
Szijarto kicked seven field goals from the 20-yard line and one
from the 30 but didn't make any attempts from the 40- or 50-yard
lines.
Aside from the big prize, a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche can be had
with a good 40-yard kick, a $15,000 Best Buy shopping spree is at
stake from 30 yards and a $10,000 selloffvacations.com travel
voucher is up for grabs from 20 yards.
Diesbourg was 0-for-3 before he hoofed his boot for a million and
said he couldn't have done without Prefontaine.
``He showed me everything that I needed,'' Diesbourg said.
For his part Prefontaine didn't try to overload the contestants
with technical information, fine-tuning their approach rather than
revamping it. He says they either have the leg to do it or they
don't.
``I pretty much just talked to them about what I do on the field
and what I tried to accomplish,'' he said. ``We adjusted Brian. He
had no approach and we gave him an approach. You need that stuff,
you need the proper equipment and proper ideas to be successful.''
Prefontaine was coming out of the Argos locker-room when he saw
Diesbourg make his kick and he'd love to see it happen again.
Prefontaine rushed over to hug Diesbourg after the kick and the
whole team joined in the celebration.
``It was great,'' he said. ``It was just really neat that
something like that could happen to somebody.''
