MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) _ Offensive lineman Mike Pearson, a five-year NFL veteran, signed with the Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday. The CFL club also released defensive back Toby Atawo and defensive linemen Corey Jackson and Darrell Lee. The six-foot-seven, 290-pound Pearson was a second-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2002. He started 31 games for the NFL club before suffering a knee injury and spent part of last season with the Miami Dolphins.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) _ The Toronto Argonauts added veteran savvy to their defensive secondary by signing veteran NFL safety Tony Dorsett Jr. on Friday. The five-foot-11, 205-pound Dorsett is the son of former NFL star Tony Dorsett. The younger Dorsett spent eight seasons in the NFL before leaving football in 2004 to grow his commercial and residential development business. Tony Dorsett Jr., 33, played for both the Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders from 1996 to 2003, appearing in ...

TORONTO (CP) _ The Toronto Argonauts are giving running back Andre Durie a second chance. Durie began the 2005 CIS season with the York Lions as a can't-miss CFL prospect. The year before, he set school records for rushing yards in a season (1,367), scoring (96 points) and rushing TDs (15). In 2003, he ran for an OUA-record 349 yards in a game versus Ottawa. But Durie's pro aspirations _ ...

The Toronto Argonauts have come down on receiver Arland Bruce III for accusing CFL officials of being racist and taking bribes following the club's loss to Montreal on Sunday in the East Division final. The Argos issued a statement Monday evening, stating they had fined Bruce an unspecified amount for his comments and emphasizing that the opinions expressed by Bruce are not shared by the CFL club. The move came ...

He arrived amid much fanfare and hoopla but left quietly with no tearful farewell, no emotional good-bye. Ricky Williams spent his final day as a Toronto Argonaut on Monday attending a season-ending meeting, then cleaning out his locker at the team's practice facility. And in his final impromptu media gathering, the 29-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner remained true to the living-in-the-moment form he preached from the day he arrived here ...

The second time was indeed the charm for Jason Gavadza and the Toronto Argonauts. Prior to the start of the season, the Argos made an inquiry to Gavadza about joining the CFL club. But after being released in the off-season by the B.C. Lions, the six-foot-three, 249-pound tight end-fullback opted against continuing his pro football career, instead deciding to concentrate full-time on a budding real estate career as well as ...

Kevin Glenn says his mere presence is proof positive his injured left ankle won't be a factor in the East Division semifinal. ``It's fine,'' the Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback said Saturday. ``I wouldn't be on this trip if it wasn't. ``It's one of those things that has got better as the week went on and I'm ready to play Sunday. If I have to scramble, I'll be able to scramble. No worries.'' Glenn suffered a sprained left ankle ...

Milt Stegall wasn't backing down Saturday. Earlier this week, the colourful Winnipeg slotback dismissed Toronto as a city that doesn't care about the CFL or the hometown Argonauts. And on Saturday, the day before the Blue Bombers face the Argos in the East Division semifinal (CBC, 1 p.m. ET), Stegall was quick to again criticize the city's football fans. ``The CFL is a great league,'' Stegall said. ``What you're doing with fans here, I don't say fans ...

Arland Bruce III believes for the Toronto Argonauts to advance to the East Division final, they're going to have to break with tradition. The Argos fell behind in all three of their regular-season games against Winnipeg, managing to rally for the victory just once. It's not a trend Bruce wants to see repeat itself when Toronto faces the Blue Bombers in the East Division semifinal Sunday (CBC, 1 p.m. ET). ...

The Montreal Alouettes never imagined it would take quite so long to clinch the East Division title. But after riding a roller-coaster season, the Als came through when it mattered, with Robert Edwards' touchdown late in the fourth quarter Saturday giving them a 24-20 victory over the Toronto Argonauts and first place in the East. ``I'm very happy for our guys, the type of year it's been, they deserve it,'' ...

Mike O'Shea achieved a rare milestone Friday night. The Toronto linebacker registered his 1,000th career tackle in the third quarter of the Argonauts' game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. O'Shea joined Willie Pless (1,241) and Alondra Johnson (1,084) at the only players to achieve the honour, but the native of North Bay, Ont., is the first Canadian to do so. The six-foot-two, 235-pound O'Shea, in his 14th CFL season and 10th with Toronto, made the historic tackle by chasing Saskatchewan running ...

Defensive tackle Scott Schultz and Co., helped ensure rookie Andy Fantuz's homecoming was a triumphant one. Schultz and Saskatchewan's defence made Fantuz's first-half touchdown catch stand, anchoring the Roughriders' hard-fought 13-9 road win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night. Fantuz, a native of Chatham, Ont., who played collegiately at the University of Western Ontario, had plenty of friends and family present to watch his first-ever professional game at the Rogers Centre. And he gave them plenty to ...

Mike O'Shea has thrown plenty of opponents to the ground during his 14 years in the CFL and knocking down three more Friday night will put him in some pretty heady company. The Toronto Argonauts linebacker from North Bay, Ont., heads into Friday night's contest against the Saskatchewan Roughriders (TSN, 7:30 p.m. ET) needing three tackles for 1,000 in his career. Getting them would make him just the third CFLer _ and first Canadian _ to reach ...

Noel Prefontaine's tutelage helped Brian Diesbourg nail a 50-yard field goal for $1 million last year and Bill Szijarto hopes the Toronto Argonauts kicker can do the same thing for him. ``I've got a good feeling about him,'' Szijarto said Thursday as he practised with the all-star at the Rogers Centre. ``I think he'll be there every step of the way. That's the kind of guy he is.'' Szijarto's name was drawn from 1.5 million entries ...

Defensive back Byron Parker has become a bona fide offensive threat for the Toronto Argonauts. Parker has returned four of his team-high seven interceptions for touchdowns this year. That leaves Parker second on the team in TDs scored behind receiver Arland Bruce III (who has 10). The sophomore cornerback has found the end zone twice as often this season than heralded running back Ricky Williams, a former NFL rushing champion. ...

This is becoming a CFL season to remember for defensive back Byron Parker of the Toronto Argonauts. Parker returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in Toronto's 28-25 road victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday. The interception was Parker's sixth of the year and marked the fourth time he had taken one back for a touchdown. But the return gave him a league-record 342 yards this season, breaking the previous mark of 300 yards set ...

Damon Allen hit Arland Bruce III with two first-half touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts hung on to beat the Edmonton Eskimos 28-23 on Monday and cement an East Division playoff spot. Allen's TD strikes to Bruce gave the Rogers Centre gathering of 26,891 spectators plenty to cheer about in the first half. But the situation got tense in the second when the defending Grey Cup champions erased a 25-7 deficit ...

The long wait is finally over for John Avery and Ricky Williams. For much of the season, the two former NFL first-round draft picks could only talk about what life might be like with both players in the same backfield. But on Monday both Avery and Williams will be on Toronto's roster for the first time this year and are projected to line up together behind quarterback Damon Allen versus the Edmonton Eskimos at Rogers Centre (CBC, ...

It's good news for Toronto Argonauts running back Ricky Williams. There were suggestions he had re-injured his left Achilles tendon after he limped off the field in the fourth quarter of Toronto's win over Calgary on Saturday. But the team says tests show no damage or tears. Williams is expected to be on the practice field tomorrow when the club begins its preparations for its game Oct. 9 at Rogers ...

Ricky Williams and Eric England scored second-half touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts hung on for a tense 23-16 home win over the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night.
