Austrian authorities have seized 38,500 pairs of fake Nike shoes, police said Wednesday.
Police in Upper Austria province seized the shoes on two separate occasions from four truck trailers, a statement said.
Police seized the first load _ more than 18,000 pairs _ on Friday when they inspected two trailers they suspected of transporting narcotics. They seized the second load _ more than 20,000 pairs _ on Monday.
The shoes were destined for England and were probably produced in China, police said, adding that the drivers and the Austrian shipping agent did not know they were transporting illegal goods. An investigation is under way.
An expert identified the shoes as fakes, and estimated their worth at about $7.3 million US.
