Mohammed Yousuf to lead Pakistan cricket team

Mohammed Yousuf was named Pakistan captain on Thursday after Younis Khan refused to lead the team in the Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board's decision came two days ahead of the squad's departure to India for the limited-overs tournament.

``I told PCB that I am refusing the captaincy because I do not want to be a dummy captain,'' Khan told a news conference at PCB headquarters in Lahore. ``I will give reasons later.''

He then left the room.

Khan apologized to the PCB and was retained in the squad.

Usual skipper Inzamam-ul Haq was banned for four limited-overs internationals for bringing the game into disrepute during the forfeited test against England at The Oval in August.

The PCB said Khan, the vice-captain, did not consult the board about his decision and it ``was a breach of discipline'' that will be dealt with.

``However, Mr. Younis Khan has since expressed his regret to the (PCB) chairman for the unsavoury incident,'' a PCB statement said.

PCB named Yousuf as captain and pace bowler Abdul Razzaq as his deputy for the Champions Trophy starting on Oct. 15.

Yousuf, a middle-order batsman who made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 1998, has led Pakistan in a handful of Tests and one-dayers.
