WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison has been arrested and charged with assault of police officers and violent car theft.
The 29-year-old Scottish boxer was detained Oct. 6 in southern Spain and is awaiting trial, police said Tuesday. His manager, Barry Hughes, insisted Harrison did not assault anyone or steal a car, contending the arrest stems from language problems.
Harrison, training for a Dec. 9 bout against Nicky Cook in London, has received treatment for depression and alcohol problems. He withdrew from his title defence in May against Gairy St. Claire after he was arrested in a nightclub.
In September, police charged Harrison with six offences, including assault and fraud, related to matters in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Hughes said this latest trouble began after Harrison's car broke down.
``There was a confrontation because of a language communication problem,'' he said. ``He doesn't speak any Spanish, and the officer didn't speak any English. This is what led to Scott's arrest. Nowhere on the charge sheet does it say that he has stolen a vehicle.''
Hughes said Harrison was being ``unlawfully held,'' and he hoped to have him released Tuesday or Wednesday.
``He had no interpreter when he was arrested or at the court,'' the manager said. ``Scott denies assaulting anyone.''
Hughes said Harrison's fight was still on with Cook, a former European champion.
``Scott's in great shape,'' he said. ``This is just a setback of one week's training. As soon as he gets out, he'll be straight back into the training again.''
