Randall Bailey won the vacant IBA
Intercontinental light welterweight title Friday night, stopping
Shawn Gallegos in the eighth round.
Bailey, the two-time world super-lightweight champion from Miami,
improved to 34-5 with his 31st knockout. Gallegos, from Las Vegas,
N.M., dropped to 16-3.
Gallegos, who had swelling on his nose and bruises around both
eyes, couldn't escape Bailey's repeated rights to the head,
prompting referee Tommy Kimmons to stop the fight at 1:55 of the
eighth.
The 32-year-old Bailey won the WBO junior-welterweight title in
May 1999, stopping Carlos Gonzalez. After two successful defences,
Bailey lost his title against Ener Julio in July 2000. Bailey
stopped Demetrio Ceballos to capture the WBA 140-pound title in
February 2002, but lost the belt in his first defence against
Diobelys Hurtado.
Bailey weighed in at 138 pounds, a pound lighter than Gallegos.
