Super middleweight Peter Manfredo Jr.
stopped fellow Providence resident Joey Spina in the third round of
a scheduled 12-round non-title fight Saturday night at the Dunkin'
Donuts Center.
Manfredo landed two hard right hands at the beginning of the
third round that staggered Spina. A third right put Spina on the
canvas.
Before referee Charles Dwyer could finish his count, Spina's
corner signalled to stop the fight at 1:01 of the third round.
``I told you I'm on a different level,'' said Manfredo, who is
now 26-3 with 12 knockouts. ``I never wanted to hurt anyone from
Rhode Island, but he kept shooting his mouth off. I guess he got his
money, but he took the beating of his life.''
Spina (19-1-1, 14 knockouts) said he injured his left hand in the
second round.
``I jammed my thumb,'' said the 29-year-old. ``After that I
couldn't do anything. I didn't do what I wanted to do, which was
knock him out.''
Manfredo first hurt Spina midway through the second round.
Manfredo landed an overhand right and Spina's right knee came within
about an inch of touching the canvas. Spina regained his balance
just in time to avoid being knocked down.
The 25-year-old Manfredo was a finalist in the first season of
the reality TV show ``The Contender,'' losing to Sergio Mora in the
finals. His last fight was Feb. 13 when he stopped Scott Pemberton
in the third round.
Earlier, Allan Green of Tulsa, Okla., stopped Jerson Ravello of
Newark, N.J., at 2:24 of the eighth round of a scheduled eight-round
super middleweight bout.
The 27-year-old Green is now 23-0 with 16 knockouts. Eight of his
last 11 victories were knockouts. He is ranked fifth by the WBO and
19th by the WBC.
The 29-year-old Ravello, a member of the Dominican Republic's
2000 Olympic team, dropped to 17-2 with 12 knockouts.
