Costa Rican boxer Lucas Green Arias was recovering in hospital Sunday after suffering a head injury in a loss to Jean Pascal of Laval, Que., fight promoter Yvon Michel said.
Arias (11-2) suffered bleeding on the brain after he was floored by Pascal near the end of the sixth round of their super-middleweight bout for the WBC Latino title on Saturday afternoon at the Montreal Casino.
Michel visited the hospital Sunday morning and was told that Arias responded well to a procedure to relieve the bleeding.
``He was reacting, answering questions,'' Michel said. ``(The doctors) are happy with how it went.''
Arias is on medication, which will gradually be reduced as his recovery progresses, he added.
The 25-year-old from San Jose, Costa Rica, known as El Pirata, looked to be winning the sixth round of an even fight until Pascal (14-0) sent him to the canvas with a flurry of blows late in the sixth.
Arias was able to get up for the final second of the round, but moments later slid off his stool in his corner, vigorously rubbing his head.
He was treated at ringside, then taken to hospital on a stretcher.
Arias had failed to make the 168-pound limit at the weigh-in on Friday, despite hastily burning off pounds in a sauna.
He had said there was a mix-up over the time of the weigh-in, which was four hours before he had anticipated. Michel said Arias' camp was given a full schedule of events in advance.
