Once was quite enough for the Toronto Raptors.
Chris Bosh and Fred Jones scored 16 points apiece to lead the
Raptors to a 118-84 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv in an exhibition game
Thursday. The victory comes a year after Toronto lost to the Israeli
powerhouse, earning the disreputable distinction as the first NBA
team in 17 years to lose to a European squad.
``We just wanted to come out and play hard and win this game,''
said Raptors veteran Morris Peterson. ``It was embarrassing for us
last year.''
T.J. Ford added 13 points and six assists, as eight Raptors
scored in double figures. Bosh, who missed the previous two games
with a sore left heel, added seven rebounds for Toronto, which
improved to 5-0 in the pre-season.
Noel Felix led Maccabi with 19 points, while Will Bynum finished
with 14.
The game was part of a Raptors tradition of hosting an
international team in the pre-season _ plus a chance at payback for
last year. Anthony Parker, who joined Toronto in the off-season,
starred for Maccabi in that game, hitting a jump shot with less than
a second on the clock to lift Maccabi to a 105-103 win.
The Raptors looked in danger of a repeat performance Thursday,
trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half.
``Coach (Sam Mitchell) was frustrated at halftime because those
guys were playing well and we weren't doing anything on the
defensive end,'' Peterson said. ``I know coach didn't want to lose
to this team, we didn't want to lose. I didn't want to lose either,
last year Anthony hit that shot on me to win, and that was in the
back of my mind.''
The Raptors cranked up their defence in the third, and finished
the energetic quarter on a 20-2 run to lead 84-71 heading into the
fourth.
Andrea Bargnani's dunk with 1:42 left in the game capped eight
straight points from the rookie and gave Toronto a 31-point lead,
and the Raptors, with their second unit on the floor, cruised to
victory.
``We understand it's pre-season, we know the regular season
starts a whole different ballgame, but what we're trying to do is
continue to build,'' Mitchell said. ``What we're trying to do is
establish a culture of winning, get used to winning, get the feeling
of winning.''
A couple of NBA squads have fallen to European teams since
Toronto's historic loss last season _ Philadelphia lost to
Winterthur FC Barcelona, and the Los Angeles Clippers were defeated
by CSKA Moscow, both in this pre-season.
Parker signed a three-year deal worth about US$12 million with
the Raptors in the off-season, leaving behind the team he led to
three Euroleague titles. Parker was also coming off his second
straight Euroleague MVP award-winning season.
The new Raptor said it brought back memories playing his old
team.
``Starting with the Israeli national anthem. I haven't heard it
in so long and I'm humming along, that was special for me,'' Parker
said.
``It was weird, to see those guys wearing yellow and me not to be
on their side and lining up against them. But I had fun, and I'm
glad my side won.''
Parker hasn't forgotten his Maccabi fans _ he wears No. 18 with
the Raptors as a gesture to Israeli people. The number is the Jewish
symbol for life.
Parker finished with 11 points, along with Bargnani and Joey
Graham. Jose Calderon had 12, while P.J. Tucker finished with 10.
The affair was practically a home game for Maccabi as the fans,
many clad in yellow-and-blue Maccabi T-shirts and waving Israel
flags, cheered as loudly for the visitors, periodically erupting
into chants of ``Ma-cca-bi.''
``Certainly wherever Maccabi goes, they have great support from
their fans,'' Parker said.
The majority of the Maccabi roster is Israeli _ three Americans,
a Croatian and a Lithuanian make up the remainder. The only players
with NBA experience are Rodney Buford, a five year veteran of the
NBA (he didn't dress Thursday), and Bynum, who played 15 games with
Golden State last season. Buford didn't play Thursday.
Maccabi led 29-25 after the first quarter, then stretched their
lead to 13 points in the second. The Raptors battled back and a
fadeaway jumper by Bosh as the buzzer sounded to end the half cut
Maccabi's lead to 55-53 at the break.
Notes: The Raptors host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, then
wrap up the pre-season on the road with games Oct. 25 at Boston and
Oct. 27 at Chicago. ... The touring Maccabi team was coming off
three exhibition losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns and
San Antonio Spurs.
