Travis Diener started again in place of
injured Orlando point guard Jameer Nelson and scored 23 points as
the Magic defeated the San Antonio Spurs 92-87 in pre-season action
Saturday night.
Diener, a second-year player from Marquette, was 4-of-4 on
three-point shots. Two of them came in the game's final 8:45 when
the score was either tied or the Spurs had a two-point lead.
The Magic (3-0) haven't had Nelson for the pre-season because of
a mild concussion.
Orlando also got 14 points apiece from Darko Milicic and Keith
Bogans.
The Spurs (2-1) had an 83-81 lead until Pat Garrity hit his
second three-pointer in four minutes with 3:16 remaining in the
game.
Diener finished the game by hitting a turnaround jumper from 18
feet and sank two free throws in the final minute. He was 7-of-11
from the floor.
Manu Ginobili scored all of his 14 points in the first quarter to
lead San Antonio, which played 18 players. Tony Parker and Tim
Duncan both scored 10 points for the Spurs, whose starters each
played 19 minutes.
Each of the Magic starters played more than 25 minutes. Diener,
who has scored in double figures in each pre-season game, logged 44
minutes.
Dwight Howard was held to nine points on 4-of-13 shooting in 29
minutes. It's the first time he's not scored in double digits during
the pre-season.
Orlando also was without first-round draft choice J.J. Reddick,
who has yet to play in the pre-season because of a left foot soft
tissue tear.
