Pat Garrity scored 18 points and Dwight
Howard added 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic
over the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies 112-89 in a pre-season game
Saturday night.
Trailing 66-37 at halftime, Memphis missed eight of its first 10
shots in the third quarter. The Grizzlies mounted an 11-0
fourth-quarter run, but were still down by 22 points before James
Augustine responded with two free throws with 4:47 left.
Hakim Warrick and Kyle Lowry led Memphis with 13 points apiece,
while Alexander Johnson had 12 points and seven rebounds before
fouling out with 1:57 left. No Memphis player cracked double digits
in scoring until Johnson's fast-break dunk with 7:01 left in the
game.
All five Magic starters scored in double figures and reserve
Carlos Arroyo added 13 points and eight assists. Jameer Nelson had
10 points and five assists.
Rookie J.J. Redick saw his first pre-season action for Orlando
after rehabilitating torn tissue in his foot. A reviled figure in
college, Redick was greeted warmly by the home crowd, who waited
with great anticipation for his first bucket. He missed his only two
shots, the second an open jumper set up by Arroyo on the fast break,
and had one foul in 12 minutes.
Garrity had nine points in seven minutes during a 19-1 Magic run
that gave them a 34-21 second-quarter advantage. He, Arroyo and
undrafted rookie Kasim Powell accounted for all the Magic's buckets
while usual scorers Howard, Nelson and Turkoglu sat out.
Memphis went nearly 5{ minutes from the end of the first quarter
into the second without scoring a point. The Grizzlies had just 16
the entire second quarter and turned the ball over 10 times.
Despite 10 offensive rebounds in the first half, Memphis had only
seven second-chance points, compared with 14 for Orlando on three
offensive boards.
Jake Tsakalidis fouled out with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter.
He had five points and six rebounds in 16 minutes.
Memphis was without Pau Gasol (broken foot), Brian Cardinal
(bruised knee), Eddie Jones (sore Achilles') and Mike Miller (big
toenail removed).
Darko Milicic (bruised lower back) and Grant Hill (coach's
decision) sat out for Orlando.
