Magic take advantage of injuries to West and Chandler to beat Hornets 100 85

Pat Garrity scored 19 points and Dwight Howard added 17 to lead the Orlando Magic to a 100-85 pre-season victory over New Orleans on Friday night as the Hornets lost two starters to ankle injuries.

Leading scorer David West and new acquisition Tyson Chandler limped off the floor in a span of about five minutes in the third quarter, and the Magic soon took control of the game.

West, New Orleans' leading scorer and rebounder last season, had scored 17 points for the second straight game before spraining his right ankle with 6:07 left in the third quarter.

After West limped off, Desmond Mason made four free throws to give the Hornets a 62-60 lead. Howard then scored seven points during a 21-4 run to put the Magic ahead to stay.

Chandler, acquired in an off-season trade with Chicago, sprained his left ankle 46 seconds into the second half.

That still didn't stop New Orleans coach Byron Scott from putting rookie of the year Chris Paul back into the game in the fourth quarter to spark a brief comeback try with assists on three straight baskets.

Travis Diener added 14 points for Orlando, while rookie Kasib Powell had 12 and Darko Milicic and Keith Bogans 10 each.

Mason scored 16 points to lead New Orleans, while first-round draft pick Hilton Armstrong added 10.

Last season, West sprained his left ankle in a pre-season game and was hampered by it all season. The injury caused him to miss six games but he also played with pain in others as the Hornets remained in contention for the playoffs. He still finished second in voting for the NBA's most improved player after averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds.

The Hornets were already without free agent signee Peja Stojakovic because of a left quadriceps strain.

In their final pre-season game in Oklahoma City, the Hornets jumped out to a 30-21 lead late in the first quarter. The Magic scored the final seven points of the first half to lead 47-46.
