Blue Jays strike out on new pitchers at baseball winter meetings

The Toronto Blue Jays are leaving the winter meetings without any new pitchers.

The representative for free agent starter Gil Meche told the Blue Jays on Thursday morning that they're out of the running for his services.

Meche, a right-hander for the Seattle Mariners last season, is one of the more coveted pitchers on the market.

``They told us this morning they're not coming to Toronto,'' said Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi.

The Blue Jays made a pick in the Rule 5 draft, taking infielder Jason Smith from the Chicago Cubs. Ricciardi, meanwhile, said the club would no longer pursue veteran infielder Chris Gomez.
