The Seattle Mariners and free-agent outfielder
Jose Guillen were closing in on a US$5.5 million, one-year contract
Saturday.
A person familiar with the talks, speaking on condition of
anonymity because the deal has not been finalized, said that the
agreement was expected to be finalized after Guillen completes a
physical with the team Monday.
The deal includes the potential for Guillen to earn up to $3
million in performance bonuses.

bench coach Thursday, four years after he left the same job to go to
Tampa Bay with Lou Piniella.
Piniella was announced Tuesday as the Chicago Cubs' manager.
