Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis broke his right index finger during an at-bat in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the AL division series on Wednesday.
X-rays taken after the Athletics' 5-2 win over Minnesota revealed the fracture. His status will be updated on Thursday at the team's workout in Oakland.
The Athletics lead the best-of-five series 2-0 heading into Friday's Game 3.
Ellis went 2-for-4 with two singles in the win. He was swinging at a pitch from Joe Nathan when the ball hit him in the hand.
Ellis waved his hand and appeared to be in pain while trainers looked him over. He finished the at-bat by striking out looking and was replaced by D'Angelo Jimenez at second base in the bottom of the ninth.
``I asked him how he was doing, he said, `Get somebody ready for defence,''' A's manager Ken Macha said. ``That's probably not a good sign.''
