Batting and first base coach won't be back for Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers began an off-season overhaul Thursday, announcing that batting coach Butch Wynegar and first-base coach Dave Nelson will not be offered contracts for next year.

General manager Doug Melvin said the remainder of the coaching staff has been invited back for next season. Both Wynegar and Nelson are finishing their fourth year with the team, 73-85 entering the final four games.

``You get to a point where you see some of the improvements that need to be made,'' manager Ned Yost said. ``It wasn't from lack of effort or passion, but just somewhere down the road we never grasped the message.''

Yost said there were differences in philosophy and offensive approach. The Brewers were tied for 15th in the NL with a .258 average and 12th in runs scored.

``It's just basic simple mental stuff at the plate and we've preached it and preached it and preached it, and there was never any indication it was getting through by watching our at-bats,'' Yost said. ``So we'll try a different tack.''

The Brewers also announced that strength and conditioning specialist Rick Spenner will not be offered a contract for next season.
