The Los Angeles Angels declined a 2007
option Friday on left-handed pitcher J.C. Romero, who can become a
free agent after the World Series.
Also, Darin Erstand had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle,
fixing an injury that limited the former Gold Glove first baseman
and centre-fielder to 40 games for the Angels this season.
The surgery, done at Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center in Los Angeles,
revealed no major structural damage, Dr. Phil Kwong said. Erstad's
ankle was placed in a hard cast and he will begin rehabilitation in
about two weeks.
Romero had a 1-2 record with a 6.70 ERA in 65 relief appearances
this season. He allowed 57 hits, walked 28 and struck out 31.
The 30-year-old pitcher has a 26-22 record with two saves and a
4.60 ERA in 392 career appearances. He was acquired by the Angels
last December from Minnesota in exchange for minor league infielder
Alexi Casilla.
