Detroit Tigers agree to terms with veteran right hander Jose Mesa

Reliever Jose Mesa and the Detroit Tigers agreed Monday to a US$2.5-million, one-year contract.

Detroit also announced its $24-million, four-year deal with third baseman Brandon Inge. He will make $4.9 million next year, $6.2 million in 2008, $6.3 million in 2009 and $6.6 million in 2010.

Mesa, 40, was 1-5 with a 3.86 earned-run average with the Colorado Rockies this year. He was ninth in the National League with a career-high 79 appearances.

``He brings a veteran presence and a wealth of experience in a variety of roles to help strengthen our bullpen,'' Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said.

Mesa is 78-106 with a 4.27 ERA with a 320 saves in an 18-year major league career.

Inge was one of the holdovers from the 2003 Tigers team that lost an AL record 119 games, then won the AL pennant this season before losing the World Series in five games to St. Louis.

Inge had career highs this year with a .253 batting average, 27 homers and 83 RBIs with 83 runs and a .463 slugging percentage.
